Can Your Venue Host a Drone Light Show? Questions to Ask Early
Published on October 20, 2026

Your venue may be suitable for a drone light show even if it includes buildings or other structures. The first step is checking the available flight space, audience location, and access.

Here are the key questions to ask early.

Is there enough flight space?

As a starting point, plan for a typical show space around 200 feet wide and 200 feet high. The full flight volume, including depth, depends on the design and fleet size and must be confirmed for your event.

Send a venue map showing buildings, trees, roads, parking, and the proposed viewing area.

How far away should spectators be?

Use 2 feet up to 1 foot out as a general planning guideline. For a show reaching 200 feet high, that means 100 feet of horizontal separation between the nearest flight-area boundary and spectators.

Keep this buffer clear of people and confirm how access will be controlled, including any barriers or stewarding needed. The show team must confirm the actual separation for your site and applicable approvals.

Can drones fly over buildings?

Flights over buildings and other structures may be possible where the area below is unoccupied and access can be controlled.

Buildings do not automatically rule out a venue, but the team must assess obstacles, property permissions, and operating requirements before confirming the flight area.

Can the team access and manage the site?

Identify a setup area and suitable access for the crew and equipment. Share nearby public paths, roads, entrances, and other activities that could bring people into the operational area.

Starbound reviews flight space, viewing areas, obstacles, airspace requirements, and setup access when assessing a venue. See Starbound’s venue guidance.

Start with a venue check

Send your event date, venue address, site map, and a few photographs. Include your preferred audience location and any known access restrictions.

Ask Starbound Labs to assess your venue before committing to a show layout.
